This family session was scheduled to take place last Saturday, but poor little Mak became ill in the morning, and vomited on the way to the park, so it was time for plan B. Since Nana and Grampy live several hours away and were visiting only for the long weekend, we decided to try for a Thanksgiving Day session instead. We started at 9am, and although it was dry and sunny, wow, was it ever c.o.l.d.!!!
Don't you just love the fall colors? (Too funny, I just noticed the breath steam coming out of Nana's mouth!!!) :o)

Stuart and Deb brought their three gorgeous girls for family pictures a year ago, and the girls are, if it's possible, even more sweet and beautiful now. I absolutely loved the time we spent together for my first ever beach session, and I hope that Daddy is able to see his lovely ladies while he's away on business (even though the country he's in apparently blocks Blogger...)

Last September I did family pictures for Josh and Krista and their two lovely girls. Next month we're scheduled for another session to update...and can I just say how excited I am to see how much the girls have grown and changed in a year?! Anyway, Krista was having trouble with PayPal, so she sent her session fee to me in the mail, and it arrived today.

Do you see it? That's one of my pictures from last year!

Doesn't it look so adorable as a stamp?! I can't tell you how tickled I was to see this, and I just thought it was so special that she put it on a piece of mail for me to see.

(yep, I said it...Christmas is coming!!)

Mini-session days are here...

The kids have gone back to school, the leaves are threatening to change colors, and there is a nip in the air. What does all this mean? The busiest season of a photographer's year is upon us...pre-Christmas season!!!

Since everyone needs an updated family photo for their Christmas greeting cards, September-November are crazy months around here. This year's cut-off date for photo sessions is November 15th, if you are looking to receive your order before Christmas. But to make it easy for everyone to fit in, I'm offering two mini-session days this fall. Here's how they'll work:

When, Where, and How?

Sessions will take place on Saturday, October 24th, and Saturday, November 7th. (Please note that sessions will be booked for November 7th only once the schedule for October 24th has been filled.) Sessions will be scheduled throughout the day, and will be 30 minutes each, with the focus being primarily on capturing good group shots. As time (and children) allow, we will also work on capturing individual shots, but please be aware that these will be secondary to the family pictures. Sessions will take place here at the studio, with the option (weather permitting) of some outdoor shots as well as in-studio work.

Investment:

With this special collection you will receive:
* one mini-session
* four 5x7 prints
* two 8x10 prints
* one custom-designed greeting card, delivered as a digital file with a print release
* $100 print credit for additional prints
* additional digital files may be purchased for the discounted price of $50 each

All this (a $360 value) is included in this Pre-Christmas Collection for $250.

Vienna's mom brought along the cutest little personal-sized birthday cake. Vienna was just too dainty to really dig in; she loved the cake, but politely scraped bits off the top a little at a time. What a princess!! :o)

This morning I had beautiful little Lily Rose in my studio. At almost one month old, it took a little more coaxing than usual to get her to fall deeply asleep, and then stay asleep enough to let us play with her. But I promised her mom that if we were patient enough, we'd get what we wanted...and lo and behold, we did!

Mom and Dad might have their work cut out for them with this little gem's attitude...when she was done, she used some universal sign language to let me know it! :o)

I am so excited about the new song on my website!! Those of you who have a tv might recognize it already...I understand that it's currently being used in a Toyota commercial and on the show Jon & Kate Plus 8. However, I just heard it online for the first time yesterday, and I immediately fell in love with it, and thought it would be the perfect song for my website. So I emailed the band, giving them the link to my site, and asking them how I could get the rights to play the song. I figured I'd have to pay royalties or a licensing fee or something, and that it would probably be totally out of my league, but I thought it was worth a try anyhow.

This little family has been blessed with a very busy life...with 2.5 year old twins, and a 1.5 year old little girl, you can bet mom and dad are kept hopping!

New Collections

Over the last several weeks, I've been hard at work determining my new pricing structure, and building collections. I used to charge a session fee up front, then prints and boutique items were ordered a la carte in addition to the session fee. Digital files were only available as a complete set for $500.

Since I had a lot of requests for individual digital files, I decided to rework my pricing structure, so that I could offer collections that include both prints and digital files. I analyzed the orders I received over the last year, determined which sizes were the most popular, and calculated the average number of prints that were ordered in each size. Then I added in some digital files and a few boutique goodies, deducted anywhere from 15% to 40% off of the full retail value of the package components, and voila, my new packages were born! I am still offering straight forward a la carte ordering as well, if a client prefers not to purchase a full collection, but have set a $200 minimum print order in place, to cover my time and expenses for each session.

I have a big event coming up in the next month, and I need a good logo for print advertising. So I just made myself a new logo, and I'd love your input on it. The tree image (which I purchased, BTW, with permission for royalty-free use in marketing and such), is based on the meaning of Vanderboom, which is "from the tree". I really couldn't think of anything else that would symbolize me. :o)

One tough little man

Little Maxwell, at about 9 weeks old, still weighs less than my smallest child did at birth!! Now of course, all my babies are pretty big, but this little man started out a bit behind...that's what happens when you are born 7 1/2 weeks early! Colleen had called me back in the fall to book me for a spring maternity session, but that never took place, because Maxwell decided he wanted to come and meet his family earlier than planned. He finally came home from hospital about 10 days ago, and today was his big photo shoot. It took us 3 1/2 hours from start to finish, because this little guy was having so much fun that he didn't want to fall asleep and miss out on anything, but we stuck with it, and got some winners!

Momstown Christmas Party

Wow, what a fun morning! A local Momstown (support community for moms and families) invited me to set up a portrait station at their annual Christmas party. I wasn't sure how many to expect, so I made a sign-up sheet for 20. That was full within 10 minutes, and we started on a wait list! Not all families stayed until the end of the party though, so in all, I ended up shooting 23 sessions in 2 1/2 hours. Do the math...that's an average of about 7 minutes per session...it was practically an assembly line! :o) But look at some of the lovely images we churned out (my favorite one from each session) ...

Congratulations to Shawn and Tara on the occasion of their 10th anniversary tomorrow. I had the privilege of photographing them this evening as they renewed their marriage vows at McMaster University, where they first met and fell in love. In the intervening years their family has grown by two, so we did a number of family pictures as well. These two little ones really do belong on the pages of a magazine...they are the most beautiful models!

Wow, Lee & Victoria and Kaylin came all the way from England just to have me take their pictures!! Well okay, Victoria's family and her parents' anniversary might have been a motivator too... Regardless, in a week full of rain, we got the one sunny day for some pictures along the beautiful Burlington shoreline.

Oh. Wow. I am sooooo pumped about this session!!! So far I have 19 "favorites". Yep, if I'm having trouble deciding, just think of the poor family!! :o)

But I do have laundry and cleaning to do and dinner to cook, so I really have to stop my editing for now, Shannon. But you'll be seeing more here soon, I'm sure! :o)
